FAQs

Useful information when considering your project

Does my neighbour have to pay half of the cost of the fence?

Fencing Act, your neighbour contributes half the cost of a standard fence, which is typically a 1.8m high timber paling fence. There is a formal process to follow under the Act, but we recommend starting with a friendly conversation to see if your neighbour is willing and able to contribute.
For more guidance, see the Consumer NZ website.

How do I determine where my boundary is ?

Most properties have boundary pegs marking each corner. If some pegs are missing, you can use property plans to help locate them. Alternatively, you may choose to have your boundary professionally surveyed. We can recommend a trusted surveyor if needed.

What can I expect prior to the job starting ?

We will visit your site to provide advice and recommendations as needed. After this, we’ll send you an estimate and an approximate project timeframe. If you choose to proceed, we’ll make all necessary arrangements.
Please note that work can sometimes be delayed due to weather or material supply issues. We will keep you informed throughout the process.

Do you need Building Consent?

The Dunedin City Council (DCC) requires consent for:

  • Retaining walls over 1.5 metres high (3.0 metres in rural areas if designed by a chartered professional engineer)

  • Fences or walls over 2.5 metres high

  • Swimming pools and their associated fences
For more information, visit the DCC website.

Steel Panel Fencing

Steel panels are an excellent choice if you want the fence to look the same on both sides. On sloped sections, panels may need to be cut at an angle to follow the ground’s gradient. This can result in some sections being slightly shorter—for example, a 1.8m high fence might be 1.6m in height in those areas.
